What should I be charging my cows?

#1 – Evaluate your Paradigms

No matter who you are, where you’re from, or what you do for a living, you are operating within a paradigm. Steven Covey states that “a paradigm is the lens through which we see the world.” It’s a deeply held subconscious belief which impacts each and every decision you make on a daily basis.

Questions you should be asking yourself:

  • What beliefs do you have about your operation, region, or our industry?
  • Have you ever seen exceptions to that “rule”?
  • What paradigms are helpful, or detrimental, to your operation? How can you change them?
#2 – Get acquainted with your numbers

Jordan took some time to refresh our collective memory on the three secrets to profit. We evaluated gross product, direct costs, and overheads, and evaluated the efficiency of different management decision outcomes. He invited us to look at our relationship to money and how it’s utilized by people in different mindsets around money.

Questions you should be asking yourself:

  • Do you know your projected gross product, direct costs, and overheads?
  • What is your relationship with money like?
  • What area of your business is the highest performing and lowest performing?
#3 – By changing our numbers, we change our business

In the end we looked at the balance sheet of a 500 head breeding operation. We looked at how the ranch would perform under different management strategies, ultimately learning that if ranches are managed to improve ecology and grazing efficiency, Return on Assets was far greater than just increasing gross margins alone.

Questions you should be asking yourself:

  • What ways can you increase the effectiveness of your grazing operation? (ie yeild, rest period, animal performance)
  • How much would you improve the cost/cow by implementing better grazing practices?
  • Do you have the right class of cattle for your land base?
