In the second episode of Champions of Grazing Innovation, we highlighted the regenerative journey of Maddy Pursehouse. Maddy shared her story on getting through drought with the help of MaiaGrazing.

Watch a replay of this 30-min Q&A:

Maddy Pursehouse was not born and bred into farming, she grew up in Sydney riding horses and heading to the country during her school holidays to ride. She studied agriculture at school and later at college, with the goal of one day owning and running her own farm. After travelling and working on different properties, and absorbing as much knowledge as she could, she was introduced to regenerative agriculture. In mid-2016, Maddy and her father bought their first farm, during a magnificent season and with endless green grass. Then it stopped raining.Maddy searched for answers by attending various regenerative agriculture training courses and gaining advice from mentors such as Stuart Austin. She also discovered the MaiaGrazing software tool which enabled her to capture data, implement planned grazing, understand her ideal stocking rate and forecast different scenarios.

However, upon closely analysing her data in MaiaGrazing it was clear that she should have destocked 3 months earlier than she had. It was a difficult decision but Maddy decided to sell stock at a lower price than originally purchased. The cost of not taking action would have been far greater though and her property is now reaping the benefits of making these challenging decisions.Today Maddy is in the ideal position to take advantage of a much improved season and ecological state of the farm. She has confidence in her on ground decision making, which is backed up by the MaiaGrazing software tool.
