There is a growing awareness of the essential topic of soil health. The practice of cover cropping, growing short-rotation crops between the commodity crops, is becoming more widely adopted. Grazing these cover crops can generate additional income while enhancing the soil health benefits provided by modern forage varieties employed as cover crops. I will discuss the important characteristics of the three primary groups of forages that can be utilized as cover crops – grasses legumes, and forbs such as turnips and other brassicas.
